Quotidian Lives

I am an avid people watcher. My work teeters on the
knife-edge of voyeurism, but I never abuse the privilege proffered to
those who choose to observe life from behind the lens. I prefer
instead to celebrate the never-ending variety to be found in humanity
as subject matter.
The images in this exhibition explore the minutiae of
the mundane. The gestures, the expressions and the sub-conscious
posturing of Ordinary Folk as they interact with each other and their
environments are candidly captured. From these starting points evolve
larger works, where the essence of 'ordinariness' is abstracted and
redefined to form new images which transcend the original referents to
become objects in their own right.

Defenceless: a photographic exhibition in partnership with Mark Hickson. Defenceless is a response to coastal erosion in Norfolk. The images document the loss of Happisburgh, a village on the north coast where the sea defences are no longer being maintained. Happisburgh is even now in the process of being taken by the sea.
Though the images in Defenceless are a form of documentary, they embrace an aesthetic dimension and, unlike straight reportage, encourage viewers to construct their own meanings on themes such as the passage of time, location, brokenness and loss.
