Photographic Practices

This section deals with a journey - several journeys in fact.

It traces, in a very small way,  the journey documentary photography has made as demonstrated in the Tate Liverpool exhibition 'Making History: Art and Documentary in Britain from 1929 to Now'.

It then goes on to explore the notion of the 'personal photograph' as seen in the conventional family photograph album, and how this essentially private collection of images often becomes the opposite as it enters the public domain via repurposing, appropriation and online publishing.

The final part looks at how people portray themselves through the photographic medium, and this in turn leads the author of a journey of her own: a rite of passage*  during which her sense of self is explored, analysed and laid bare for all to see. (At least, that is what will happen eventually, as this is a mere pre-cursor to a forthcoming project.)

A copy of the presentation to the group for this Unit can be downloaded here (25 Mb PowerPoint file). It includes important work already done on Sense of Self which will form part of the Self Negotiated Unit but does not yet have a place on this website.

*Thanks Paul for pointing out the obvious. Can't see the wood for the trees, as they say.
